Water Well Drilling in Nelson, BC

Bedrock wells for steep lots, lakeshore homes and rural properties around the West Arm

Around Nelson, a lot of rural homes still draw water from a creek or spring under a surface water licence. Dry summers, wildfire risk and turbidity are pushing more owners to look at a drilled well.

Drilling here usually means drilling into rock. Owen’s Drilling brings air-rotary rigs suited to hard bedrock and the experience to work on steep, tight West Kootenay sites.

Drilling in Bedrock Country

Most Nelson-area wells are rock wells, but the lakeshore and creek fans can be very different.

  • Fractured bedrock: much of the Nelson area sits on hard crystalline and sedimentary rock. Water comes from fractures, so the pump and water system need to be designed around the well’s tested yield.
  • Blewett and the surrounding benches: glacial deposits give way to fractured bedrock. Provincial mapping shows hundreds of wells in this bedrock system, but conditions change over short distances, so nearby records beat any typical depth.
  • Balfour, Procter and Harrop: creek-mouth and lakeshore deposits, where glacial and alluvial sand and gravel occur alongside bedrock. These can behave very differently from nearby rock wells, so the records for the specific fan or shoreline matter.

Moving Off Creek Water

A drilled well for owners who want a supply that depends less on summer creek flows.

Bedrock Wells

Air-rotary drilling through hard rock, with proper casing and seal.

Modest-Yield Wells

A modest-yield bedrock well can still be practical when the pump and water system are designed around its tested yield and recovery rate. Added storage may help in some cases.

Testing & Rehab

Flow testing, sampling and rehabilitation of older wells.

Getting a Rig to Your Property

Steep driveways, switchbacks, tight trees and ferry crossings are normal here. Before we schedule, we’ll ask about:

  • Driveway grade, width and turnaround space
  • Overhead lines and trees near the drill site
  • Ferry access for Harrop and Procter properties
  • Where the well can go relative to your septic field (BC setbacks apply)

Photos of your access help us quote accurately, and you can upload them with the quote form below.

Well Rules in the RDCK

  • Household well water needs no licence; irrigation and commercial use need a groundwater licence.
  • New wells must be built by a registered well driller and get a well identification plate.
  • If you hold a surface-water licence for a creek or spring, adding a well does not change it automatically. Check before giving it up.

Nelson Water Well FAQs

Is a well better than my creek licence?

A drilled well can reduce your dependence on low summer creek flows, debris and turbidity, but bedrock yields vary too. If you hold a surface-water licence, check the implications before changing or giving it up.

Can you get a rig up my driveway?

Often, yes. Send photos with your quote request and we’ll tell you honestly.

Do you serve the North Shore and Harrop-Procter?

Yes, including properties that need the ferry.

My well doesn’t produce much water. Can it work?

Often. A water system designed around the well’s tested yield can make a modest well practical for a household. We’ll assess it.
