Water Well Drilling in Fernie, BC

New wells, testing and well service from Elkford to Baynes Lake

The Elk Valley runs from Elkford down through Sparwood and Fernie to the Koocanusa country around Jaffray and Baynes Lake. Wells here are shaped by the Elk River, mountain snowpack and, in parts of the valley, a century of coal mining.

Owen’s Drilling is based about an hour west in Cranbrook, and we regularly support projects throughout Fernie and the Elk Valley.

Ground Conditions in the Elk Valley

From the Elk River floodplain to the Koocanusa benches, the ground varies a lot across the valley.

  • Elk River floodplain: river sands and gravels can yield well, but low areas around Fernie flood during spring runoff. Wellheads must sit above flood level with a sound surface seal.
  • Benches and side valleys (Hosmer, Coal Creek, Morrissey): glacial deposits over sedimentary bedrock, where depth and yield vary a lot.
  • Jaffray: unusually well documented. Provincial studies describe coarse sandy gravel and wells typically about 30 to 50 ft deep.
  • Galloway and Baynes Lake: glacial deposits are more variable here, so check the records near your property rather than assuming the Jaffray number applies.

Know What’s in Your Water

Most Elk Valley drinking water comes from groundwater, and mining-related water quality is closely monitored. In 2024, 52 drinking-water wells were sampled for mine-related substances, and nine exceeded BC’s drinking-water guideline for selenium.

If you’re buying or drilling in the upper valley, a water test gives you an answer for your property rather than assuming groundwater and river water are the same.

  • New and purchased wells: test for bacteria and standard chemistry at minimum.
  • In mine-influenced areas, add selenium and nitrate. Interior Health recommends regular testing of private water sources there.
  • If results raise questions, we can help you weigh well construction, location or treatment options.

Fernie Water Well FAQs

My property is near the Elk River. Is a well still a good option?

Often, yes. River gravels can be productive, but the wellhead has to sit above flood level and be sealed properly. We’ll plan for spring high water.

Do I need to worry about selenium?

Testing is the only way to know for your well. If you’re in the upper valley, add selenium and nitrate to your lab request.

Can you drill in winter?

Fernie’s snowpack makes winter access a site-by-site question. Clear access and a safe working area matter, so contact us early if winter could affect your project.

How far is Fernie from your yard?

About an hour on Highway 3, and we regularly support projects throughout the Elk Valley.
